Games Going Digital Only by 2028!?
Digital-only AAA games to become the standard by 2028, analyst predicts (tweaktown.com)
At first 2028 seemed really soon but the more I think about it, it makes sense
The vast majority of AAA games aren’t even on the disk anymore. You just use that as a license to play a downloaded game
Having stuff is cool but after a while a lot of people end up just going digital for most stuff anyway
On Steam for example, everything is digital and that works great even on offline devices like the Steam Deck
Ultimately while it might not make consoles cheaper in the long run, the money companies like Sony can save on stuff like disk drives should result in more performance at the same price point which is cool
We’re already sort of seeing this with PS5 bundles, collectors editions and more all coming with digital codes for games no matter what.

There’s no way this game doesn’t have a special edition console
i thought they were going to announce it at the game awards when they came up there
i feel like that will definitely be the launch ps5 slim
so knowing that Spider-Man 2 is about 3 months away, the PS5 slim is at minimum 3 months away
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is on Two Disks
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is on 2 discs for PS5, just like FF7 Remake – Polygon
The PS5 you have now just isn’t big enough
Final Fantasy 7 was on 2 disks back on the PS1, but now that it’s being remade as a trilogy, the second ENTIRE GAME in that trilogy is going to be split across two disks
This started to happen a bit back on the PS4 with games like the first Final Fantasy 7 remake, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 and usually one disk is a whole bunch of the game’s content which is transferred over and then the second disk is just the launcher for the game
The way that Square talked about FF7 Rebirth though kind of makes it seem like the game itself is going to be split across two disks which is really cool and nostalgic for people who played the original way back on the PS1
I’m really happy with the Final Fantasy situation on PlayStation because these games come out first on the console and they’re so premium that they feel like full-on exclusive games.
It probably feels a little crazy that if you want to play these games, you’re going to need a ton of ssd space on your PS5 but this is how it was back on the PS4 as well when that console shipped with a 500GB HDD
