Shortage over:
While the launch of the PlayStation 5 was momentous, there’s no denying that it was fraught with the issues that were spiralling out of the coronavirus crisis. Manufacturers couldn’t source labour, suppliers couldn’t source parts, and consumers couldn’t source the product at the end of all of that chaos. Finally, there is positive news on the amount of PS5s out there – it only took two years.
To those who haven’t picked up a PlayStation 5 yet, there’s a lot to like. The use of the 3D audio was utterly nauseating in A Plague Tale: Requiem and PlayStation Plus subscribers have praised the haptics in Axiom Verge 2 that are “subtle” yet “addicting.” And as for the visuals themselves, we’d say Horizon Forbidden West is one of the most eye-popping games on the console, packed with things to do and people to see. In fact, the sequel’s DLC is exclusive to the PS5, which is a bit of a sauce given that the game is cross-gen, but there’s a good reason for this choice.
Leonardo:
PlayStation is releasing a new customisable controller for the PS5 aimed at helping people with disabilities game more comfortably, announced at CES 2023.
The gaming giant revealed the kit, codenamed Project Leonardo, during the world’s biggest tech conference on Wednesday. PlayStation worked with accessibility organizations AbleGamers, Stack Up, and SpecialEffect to create the configurable “split controller” design.
In its announcement, the company said the controller was “built to address common challenges faced by many players with limited motor control, including difficulty holding a controller for long periods, accurately pressing small clusters of buttons or triggers, or positioning thumbs and fingers optimally on a standard controller.”
Discord:
Sony seemingly has plans to fully integrate Discord voice chat with PS5 consoles in the near future.
When it comes to communicating with friends, Discord is a popular tool among players. But so far, a lack of integration has meant that PlayStation fans have been unable to avail themselves of its VoIP (Voice Over I.P.) services to chat with pals on other platforms. That all appears to be about to change, though, as a recent Discord datamine posted on GitHub has revealed various files that clearly reference voice chat functionality on PS5.
Among the unearthed data is the line “Now you’re ready to join a call on your PS5. Grab your headset and controller!” as well as “We have new features for PS5 users. Hang out with Discord friends while playing games in voice chat.” The data strings are backed up by various images which also mention voice chat features on PS5.
While this is certainly welcome news for PS5 owners, the same can’t be said for those playing on PS4. One image displays the text “Join voice chat on PS5” but only “Display the game you’re playing” on PS4, suggesting voice chat won’t be supported on Sony’s older console. In a discussion on Reddit, one user lamented the apparent lack of PS4 support, describing it as “extremely disappointing considering the vast majority of their install base are still on it and Xbox extended it to their entire console family”.
