Fortnite:
Fortnite is one of the cleanest looking games on PS5 as it is, but with Epic Games at the helm, you can always bank on further improvements. Alongside the release of Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1, the developer has taken the opportunity to integrate some of the next-gen features unlocked by Unreal Engine 5, so you can expect the reformed Fortnite Island to look better than ever.
Among the improvements is the addition of Nanite, which increases the overall architectural geometry. “Specifically, buildings are rendered from millions of polygons in real time, and each brick, stone, wood plank, and wall trim is modelled,” the firm said. This is accompanied by Lumen, providing ray-traced reflections and real-time global illumination at 60 frames-per-second.
Jedi:
Original story: The Steam page for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has been updated with a release date of 16th March 2023. EA hasn’t yet confirmed an official launch date for the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel, but with rumours suggesting one will be announced this week at The Game Awards, it appears the PC platform has spilled the beans a few days early. The PS5 release date will almost certainly be the same.
Pre-order details and a Deluxe Edition are also listed on Steam, with committing cash early netting you a new costume for protagonist Cal Kestis as well as skins for the lightsaber and blaster. Callisto:
It’s been something of an open secret that Sony and PlayStation have been contributing to the development of The Callisto Protocol. The platform holder’s Visual Arts Services Group was confirmed to be part of the game’s development in November – and now that the game is out in the wild, you can see how much impact the team has had on the final product.
The Callisto Protocol, developed by new studio Striking Distance Games and published by Krafton, got the Digital Foundry treatment this week, and the results are plain to see; the PS5 version of the game far outshines the Xbox Series X/S one. There have been some patches to the game, pre-release, but from what we can see even today (on release day), there are notable differences to performance between the console versions of the game.
PS+
PlayStation appears to be copying Xbox – and more specifically, Xbox Game Pass – by adding a new component to PlayStation Plus to better highlight what games people should pay attention to. PlayStation Plus subscribers noticed this week that PlayStation’s subscription service seems to now mark a given game as a “Day 1 Release” if it’s coming to PlayStation Plus Essential, PlayStation Plus Extra, or PlayStation Plus Premium on the same day that it’s widely available. Aside from the usefulness of this feature, the fact that it exists also bodes well for PlayStation’s future PS Plus plans.
The “Day 1 Release” badge is one that PS Plus subscribers may have noticed recently when PlayStation revealed December’s free games. One of those games, Divine Knockout, is “Launching directly into PlayStation Plus,” PlayStation said. The badge affixed to the game’s artwork in the tweet below signaled as much, too.
If you’re someone who’s also subscribed to Xbox Game Pass, you’ll know that day-one releases have been a thing there for a long time now. Xbox Game Pass is getting three of those types of releases in just the first half of December, for example, and they’re always marked as such within the Xbox Wire posts that announce them.
