PSVR2 Chips:
There’s a lot of hype around Sony’s PSVR 2 virtual reality headset for PlayStation 5, which is due to arrive on 22 February 2023 – so not too long to wait. And now I think there’s even more reason to get excited.
At MediaTek Summit 2022, held in Sonoma, California, the Taiwanese-based chipmaker revealed it is the partner providing the system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for Sony’s virtual reality kit. That’s solutions, plural, as it will be involved in multiple areas of the hardware specification.
Why does that matter? You may not be familiar with the company, but you probably already own a device with a MediaTek chip inside, whether that’s a TV, an Amazon Kindle, or a Peloton – this is a company with considerable experience in a wide range of markets, especially mobile, where it has also just announced its Dimensity 9200 chip.
In the PSVR 2 specifically there are two custom-made chips, the first used for the display technology, the second a microcontroller in the controller paddles. Given the company’s experience in display technology – it owns circa 70 per cent market share in smart 4K TVs – that means we’re in safe hands when it comes to visual processing.
PS Plus Sale:
PlayStation confirms that gamers will get a 25% discount on PlayStation Plus starting November 18 as a part of its Black Friday sale. 1 year of PS Plus Essential costs $60, so fans can expect to get it for around $45. The sale may only include the Essential tier as it doesn’t specify if PS Plus Extra and Premium will also be available at a discounted rate. However, gamers can then upgrade to Extra or Premium for less than they otherwise would have had to pay.
NFT’s
A patent published this month by Sony reveals that the company seems to be expanding into developing NFTs and its own blockchain. This is separate from its PlayStation Stars program, which is already underway and released new rewards for November.
While the patent was published this month, it was actually filed a full year ago, which makes a lot of sense. The NFT landscape was significantly different a year ago, with hopes for the emerging field much higher than they are now. Since then, public and player opinion have both largely turned against NFTs for reasons ranging from artificial scarcity to environmental impact.
FSR Punk:
Cyberpunk 2077’s latest patch resolved an array of issues with the dystopian RPG, even in the soon-to-be-doomed Stadia version, and the new FSR 2.1 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles makes the game look more beautiful than ever before.
What’s FSR when it’s at home? It stands for fidelity super resolution and addresses the visual clarity in video games, overriding the default temporal anti-aliasing method that was already present in Cyberpunk 2077. According to Digital Foundry’s findings, running the game at 30 frames per second and ray-tracing and the new FSR 2.1 shines a spotlight on the enviable detail in Night City while prioritising any visual noise or nitpickings that need to be smoothed away. “A long view of the outskirts of night city brings this out especially well; more detail is noticeable at range, including the wording on shop signs, and the definition to swaying plantlife,” explained Tom Morgan.
