New IP:
A reliable insider claims that PlayStation will soon reveal a brand-new AAA IP in the coming weeks. High-budget single-player games have defined Sony’s first-party offerings for years now, so there is probably going to be a lot of excitement whenever PlayStation decides to reveal this new IP.
PS5 has received several AAA games such as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but they are both established franchises. Returnal is the closest game that matches this description, although it’s not a multi-million seller like Sony’s other major first-party games. So, this AAA IP may have the potential of becoming the first blockbuster PS5 franchise.
PSVR 2:
Once Oculus went wireless with its Quest headset in 2019, it seemed like there was no going back. For years, everyone had been talking about what a hassle cords were for VR and how they would inevitably disappear one day, once the tech got figured out. And here was Oculus ahead of schedule, figuring it out.
Sure, the games looked a generation or two out of date compared to those on Valve Index or Oculus Rift S, or even PlayStation VR, but that felt like a fair trade-off for something that didn’t make you feel like you were on a leash. Almost immediately, I switched over and started using Quest more or less exclusively for VR.
I wasn’t alone. Quest took off, becoming the most popular headset line and delivering highly convenient, decent quality VR to millions of people.
After trying PlayStation VR2 recently, I’m reminded of what we’ve been missing.
Last week, I tried Sony’s new headset for the first time and was caught off guard by how stunning two of its marquee games, Horizon Call of the Mountain and Resident Evil Village, looked. They didn’t rely on particles or stylized art direction; they looked like AAA console games that just happened to be in VR. The past few years of playing Quest had recalibrated my expectations for how VR games should appear, and it was great to see games pushing forward visually once again without requiring an elaborate setup.
DualSense:
During the most recent State of Play presentation, Sony announced that a God of War Ragnarok PS5 DualSense Controller will be released this November to commemorate the launch of the high-anticipated sequel. And you’re going to want this limited-edition pad!
This will be the first time that Sony has released a special-edition DualSense controller themed around a specific game. God of War Ragnarok definitely looks befitting of that honor, and we fully expect it to appear in our roundup of the best PS5 games shortly after its release this winter.
The limited-edition God of War Ragnarok PS5 DualSense Controller will launch on the same day as the game (Wednesday, November 9), and is likely to sell out fast. After all, the God of War Ragnarok Collector’s Edition(opens in new tab) was snapped up in mere minutes, and we expect PlayStation fans (and, unfortunately, scalpers) to be equally desperate to purchase this ice-cool controller too.
While the God of War DualSense doesn’t launch until November, you can secure yours early with a preorder starting Tuesday, September 27.
