“PlayStation Allegedly Paying To Block Games From Xbox Game Pass. Xbox owner Microsoft accuses PlayStation of trying to hinder Xbox Game Pass by paying developers to keep their games off of the service.
VGC reports that Xbox parent company Microsoft recently filed a document to Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense that includes claims that Sony is paying third-party developers not to add their games to Xbox Game Pass or any other competing service in the form of “blocking fees.” According to the statement, Microsoft accuses Sony of fearing Game Pass’s “innovative business model that offers high-quality content at low costs to gamers,” which it says threatens “a leadership that has been forged from a device-centric and exclusivity-focused strategy over the years.”

“PlayStation 5 Is Now Officially More Popular Than Nintendo GameCube. According to VGChartz, the PlayStation 5 has officially taken over Nintendo’s GameCube in the all-time sales charts. It’s believed that Sony has shifted around 21.83 million PS5 units worldwide as of 30 July, whereas the GameCube has a lifetime sales total of 21.74 million. This means that the PS5 is now the twentieth best-selling console of all time.

But so far, PlayStation Plus doesn’t feel representative of that original classics-library target, and a Wednesday blog post suggests Sony is dragging its feet. PlayStation Plus’s latest blog post confirmed that 11 games would land on the service’s premium and “extra” tiers in August. While this list includes three solid games from Sega’s Yakuza series, and the quirky likes of modern indie Bugsnax and classic RPG remake Trials of Mana, it doesn’t include games from any Sony console library outside PS4 and PS5. That follows a July addition of only three “classic” games, all from the PSP, to PS Plus. Sony tells PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers that its classics will grow to “up to 340” games, but this number includes titles that had already been on the PlayStation Now streaming service, which revolves almost exclusively around PlayStation 3 games. North American PS Plus Premium subscribers can access 294 PS3 games (though about five of these are iterative updates or DLC packages). Add 30 to that number, and you’re left with 16 possible additions.”

“PS5 may finally get native Disney Plus app to enable 4K streaming. However, the app that PlayStation owners use on the newest hardware isn’t exactly up to snuff. Notably, the PS5 runs a backward-compatible version of the PS4’s Disney Plus application. And though a September 2021 update added labels to denote 4K HDR capabilities for TV shows and movies, PS5’s version of Disney Plus tops off at 1080p resolution.
