“PS5’s high demand has left Walmart with unfulfilled orders, and now there are rumors of the retailer seemingly hoarding consoles. The current-gen consoles demand doesn’t seem to be dying down at all. Currently, we are reaching the last quarter of 2021 and the restock situation has improved. Although, even with a better picture than in previous months, PS5 scarcity is still an issue. Some retailers are still affected by this. Namely, Walmart is leaving many unfulfilled PS5 orders and now there are rumors of possible hoarding of consoles. As well, customers were pretty upset about how PS5 stock was being handled. Many pointed out on Twitter that the console was in stock in several locations according to Walmart’s system, but it was not available online to purchase.”

“A PS5 disc installation bug seems to have reappeared after having previously been fixed. According to several users across multiple subreddits, players who insert disc versions of games and choose the PS5 upgrade have had the PS4 version attempt to install to their console unprompted. Titles affected include No Man’s Sky, the recently released Death Stranding Director’s Cut and Nioh. While this doesn’t stop players from using the PS5 version, it will take up storage space on the console, which players will have to manually delete. In February, Sony seemed to have fixed the problem in an update which targeted the then-frustrating experience of cross-generation titles. In a post to the PlayStation blog detailing the update, “In rare cases, the PS4 version of a game would install from the disc after you upgraded to and installed the PS5 version,” Sony said. “Now, when you insert the PS4 game disc, the PS4 version won’t install unexpectedly.” PS5’s handling of cross-gen releases had received some criticism since launch for it’s unclear signposting of different game versions. This led to some players inadvertently playing the last-gen versions of PS5 games they own.

“As of Saturday, though, you can’t buy Darkplates anymore, as Dbrand has removed them from sale after (perhaps unsurprisingly) receiving a cease and desist letter from Sony. (If you visit the Darkplates site right now, it just shows a list of news articles, including ones from The Verge). As part of the letter, Sony asked that Dbrand “promptly and permanently cease and take down all marketing and promotion for and cease all sales worldwide of faceplates featuring the product configuration of SIE’s PS5 faceplates or any similar product configuration, including without limitation all faceplates currently for sale at dbrand.com.”

“Dbrand has revealed a brand-new design for its PS5 Darkplates just days after yanking the originals from sale. If you weren’t familiar with the original Darkplates, they looked exactly like the side shells of a PS5, but instead of being white, they were matte black. In its marketing of the first version, the company baited Sony to “Go ahead, sue us,” and Sony unsurprisingly followed up with a legal threat. Shockingly, just days after making a big public stink about Sony forcing it to pull the old version, Dbrand is already ready with a new design. The company says they’ve been in development since September, but conveniently would not tell us when Sony sent the cease-and-desist to begin with. Darkplates 2.0 look a little different than the original model. While they still attach to the sides of the PS5, the new Darkplates are more rounded instead of having quite as much of the sharp, popped collar-look that’s closely associated with Sony’s console. (They also now have a prominent vent right next to the PS5’s fan.) The new Darkplates come in three colors — matte black, a “retro gray,” and white.”
