This video explains bad and good testing practices for thermals, on both computer parts and consoles like the PlayStation 5, as well as basic thermal camera concepts for viewers.

Please take this video as it’s meant to be: An educational piece with some experiments demonstrating when thermal cameras are and aren’t useful. It’s not meant to be a statement that there’s only one way to test things (in fact, we say the opposite in the video — there are many valid ways to do testing), but certainly there are better ways than IR cameras when trying to drill down to component-level thermals. Our PS5 testing has gotten insane and is due out next week. It’s the most extensive console testing we’ve ever done, so we’re excited to share it, but only when it’s ready and fully complete. We could have published something sooner, but don’t want to rush on this coverage.
