“Console hardware is flying off manufacturing lines directly to consumers in the United States. Sony and Microsoft continue to sell every PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X they can produce. But in September, Sony was able to ship enough to outsell the competition. This is the first time either the new Xbox or PlayStation has outsold the Nintendo Switch in terms of units, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. That high demand led to strong hardware sales overall as well as strong software performance. “September video game hardware dollar sales increased 49% when compared to September 2020, to $412 million,’ said Piscatella. “Year-to-date hardware spending has also gained 49% when compared to the same period a year ago, totaling $3.4 billion.” As for the PlayStation 5 coming out on top, this is similar to when the Xbox Series X bested the PS5 in July in terms of dollar sales. The company that was able to produce and ship the most consoles was able to then sell the most consoles. Supply is the bottleneck.”

“Sony has opened up a direct registration system that will give those in the US a chance to purchase a PS5 this holiday season. However, not just anyone with a PSN account will be invited. According to the FAQ page, invitations are limited, and will be based on ‘previous interests and PlayStation activities’. There will be a limited number of consoles available, but if you want to be within a chance, all you need to do is register for an invitation using your email and PSN ID. Emails will be sent out starting in November, and if selected, you’ll be invited to purchase the console via PS Direct. Each invitation will provide access to one PS5 or PS5 Digital console. It will also have a time limit, so if you do register, keep a keen eye on your emails in November.”

“A recent system update added a bunch of highly requested features and quality-of-life improvements which you can see in more detail via the video below.
More recently, the PlayStation 5’s undeniably messy store tab just got a major improvement. Over the past few months, navigating the PS5 store has been kind of a pain. It’s typically stacked to make sure games that aren’t even out yet sit at the very top of the store, while smaller games and releases you can actually buy and play rather than just pre-order get lost in the mix. Great for AAA publishers. Not so good for indie studios trying to get their efforts out there. Thankfully, PlayStation has heard this feedback. As pointed out by Shuhei Yoshida and others on Twitter, the PS5 Store now has a “New Games” tab that makes it much, much easier to see what’s just come out and what you’ll be able to play. This is perfect for everyone who wants to keep on top of the latest releases, which I’m sure is most of us. “

“Sony has tweeted that it’s testing a beta that will let PS5 players share screenshots and clips via smartphone using the PlayStation app. That will match functionality the Xbox has offered for a while now, though so far, Sony is only testing it in a limited release. One you turn it on, the new feature will automatically upload captures to the cloud. You’ll then be able to access them on the PlayStation app for 14 days to save on your camera roll, share on social media, or send to PSN friends and parties. It should be less clunky than the current system of direct sharing from the console. On top of screenshots taken from the Create Menu or Create button shortcuts, you can share gameplay videos under three minutes in length up to 1080p (not 4K). For screenshots and videos to be auto-uploaded, make sure you’ve linked your PS5 console to the PlayStation app. It also needs to be left in rest mode and have the “Stay Connected to the Internet” setting enabled. For more details, check Sony’s (region-locked) article.”
